What should You DO FOR OVER Processed HAIR?

Over processing is a disastrous experience. It occurs when the strands of the hair have been, well, over processed. A chemical process such as relaxing or color treating hair takes a toll on the hair. Even the healthiest head of relaxed hair is technically damaged. There are a few things to remember when dealing with over processed hair. One, recovering is a long and tedious process that will be made worse if you try to cut corners. Two, it can happen even when you have been as careful as you’re expected to be. Three, this too shall pass.

Color has a similar effect on hair as relaxers. Although they’re not exactly the same, relaxing and coloring are the most common ways black hair is chemically treated. Both processes break down the hair and weaken the strands. With each application, the strands become progressively more weak.

The issue of over processing comes into play when chemicals are applied to portions of your hair that have been previously processed. This is the why one of the main issues with applying relaxer at home is the prevention of overlapping. To prevent overlapping and subsequent over processing, chemicals should be applied only to the portions of hair that are free of prior chemical treatment.

Because of the obvious physical constraints that come into play when self-relaxing, the problem of over processing is most prevalent with ‘box-perms’ applied at home. There are also women who have short relaxed hair who are at risk for over processing as well.

Short relaxed hair can be tricky to retouch safely. The hair is usually relaxed more frequently because the new growth is more apparent. And the sections of hair that need retouching are very short from root to the line of demarcation.

So, what can you do when your hair has been over processed?

The one most important thing to do is to be realistic about the situation. Many times we get caught up into believing that over processed hair can be cured or reversed.

The plain truth of the matter is that, that is simply not true. You have to grow new, healthy hair to replace the damaged hair.

Don’t be totally discouraged, because there are things that you can do to get yourself back to a healthy head of hair.

You do not have to cut your hair
Trim, yes. Cut, not necessarily. Trimming the ends will help prevent split ends that might result from the damage, from getting out of control.

There are times when the damage is so severe that cutting the over processed hair is the only option available. Some women do also choose to cut their hair once they discover that it’s over processed, because they don’t want to deal with babying their hair.

Use lots of conditioner
Conditioner fills in the gaps that are present in the strands of your hair. It is like a filler. Along with helping fill the gaps of the hair, conditioners also leave a light layer on the outer layer of the hair that acts like a coating. Those two things combined will give your hair the appearance of health.

Apply a good protein treatment
Protein treatments do what conditioners do, but times 100. Our hair is made up of protein and those bonds are broken when hair is chemically treated.

Applying a protein treatment to over processed hair can fortify the strands and bond with the damaged strands to create overall stronger strands that won’t break while you grow your hair out. Conditioner is like a filler and a good protein treatment is like a splint.

Avoid heat
Heat is probably the worst thing you could do to your hair when dealing with over processing. You want to avoid anything that will further weaken the hair. Heat can be used sparingly and safely on hair that is healthy and hair that is not severely damaged. Over processed hair is severely damaged.

Styling your hair in heatless styles, or using flexi rods to achieve certain looks, will have to be your answer to hair boredom. Hooded dryers can be used here and there to set the hair or even to do a rod set, but in general, heat is something that will cause you to have to cut your hair because of the weakened state the hair is already in.

Over processed hair can be overcome, just remember that it takes time and patience and you will have to baby your hair if you want to keep it on your head while you grow out new, healthy hair. Have you over processed your hair before? Comment below and let us know how you dealt with it.

It is NOT So Late to Get Strong Healthy Hair Before Christmas, Four TIPS For You

Hair goals are no different than goals in any other area of your life. You have to decide on a result and work backwards. Our hair care requires commitment anyway. The varying level of commitment will usually coincide with the kind of results you see in your hair. Whether your goal is growth or to simply improve the overall health of your hair, you will achieve the desired result through consistency and commitment. Before we get into all the New Year’s Resolutions that bombard us toward the end of the year, let’s get a bit of a head start by committing now to implement practices that will get us on track for a have healthier head of hair before the Christmas even gets here!

1. Exclusive use of moisturizing shampoos and conditioners
Moisturizing your hair is a must because the strands tend to be naturally dry. This is not too much of a concern as long as you replenish the lost moisture. You can easily do this by simply using products that are designed to add moisture to the hair.
Shampooing and conditioning are steps we repeat more than almost any others. They are a frequently reoccurring part of out hair care. Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners are specifically developed to infuse the strands with much-needed moisture. If you commit to only using shampoos and conditioners that are targeted at adding moisture, you will see a difference in your hair.

2. Limit heat styles to once per week (or less)
It is possible to safely use heat on your hair. However, not applying heat to your hair is always healthier. You want to land somewhere in the middle. Whenever possible, heatless styles should be implemented into your hair styling routine.
Several different heatless styles can be stretched out across your routine to give you pretty and presentable hair. The trick to staying true to this step is variety. Try to master at least 2 go to heatless styles that last for 2 to 3 days each. That way, you can wash and restyle your hair twice within a 7 day period and not use heat at all.
If you can’t commit to no heat, wash and style your hair with heat once. Then, after your next wash, wear a heatless style for the next few days and you will have easily stayed true to your commitment. Two heatless styles also keep you from getting bored. Switching between styles means you would only repeat a style 2 times within a month. How is that for variety?

3. Add oil to your hair every night
Most ladies understand the importance of implementing oils into their hair routine. But, do you really apply oil EVERY.SINGLE.NIGHT? The honest answer is probably no.
A lot of you may think this step is crazy because it will cause the hair to be heavy and weighed down. That is true if you go in too heavy handed with the application. The point of this step, though, is to simply keep the strands from popping and to reduce friction. To accomplish this, you only need a small amount of oil. The amount will differ depending on the length and density of your hair.
Oil prevents breakage and keeps the hair from fraying as it rubs against pillows, head scarves, and bed sheets. Taking a few drops and running it through your hair will have a cumulative positive effect and by Christmas, you will see a difference.

4. Deep condition with heat at least 2 times per month
The only thing worse than sitting under the dryer is deep conditioning. It just sucks. There is nothing you can do besides wait, and when you skip this step, it’s noticeable. To make matters worse, the most effective deep conditioning process includes heat. Not only do you have to deep condition, but you have to sit under the dryer and be ‘doubly’ miserable.
I understand, I hate it too. The fact remains that deep conditioning your hair with heat application pays off. Your strands need conditioning because conditioner helps to fill in the gaps in the strands that are caused by chemical processes. Deep conditioning is, well, the same thing but deeper.

Heat opens the layers of the hair, which allows the conditioner to get to the more delicate inner layers of the hair strands. Stronger hair from the inside out shows. Don’t skip the deep conditioning ladies. It is only 2 times a month. You can do it.

What are your secrets to stronger healthier hair in a short time?
